What is GNM Nursing?

General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) is a diploma program that trains students in nursing care, patient management, and midwifery services. This comprehensive course is designed to equip aspiring nurses with practical and theoretical knowledge in general healthcare, making them eligible to become registered nurses or midwives with the state nurse registration council upon successful completion.

Course Duration and Structure

The GNM Nursing course at Carmel College of Nursing is a 3-year diploma program that includes a mandatory 6-month internship. This program combines theory classes, practical training, and clinical practice to ensure students gain hands-on experience.

Year-Wise Breakdown

First Year

• Subjects: Anatomy & Physiology, Microbiology, Psychology, Sociology, Fundamentals of Nursing, First Aid, and Community Health Nursing (CHN-I)
• Theory Hours: 625 hours
• Practical Hours: 1215 hours

Second Year

• Subjects: Maternal Nursing, Child Health Nursing, Medical-Surgical Nursing, and Nutrition
• Theory Hours: 700 hours
• Practical Hours: 1100 hours

Third Year

• Subjects: Nursing Administration, Nursing Research, and Advanced Medical-Surgical Nursing
• Theory Hours: 700 hours
• Practical Hours: 1200 hours

Eligibility Criteria

• Minimum age: 17 years, maximum age: 35 years (no age limit for ANM/LHV candidates)
• Completed 10+2 in Science (with PCB) or Arts with English, securing a minimum of 40% marks
• 10+2 in the Health Care Science – Vocational stream is also eligible
• Must be medically fit
• For ANM candidates: Registered with the State Nursing Registration Council
